Handheld dot peen markers

Portable Dot Peen Marking Machines for Parts You Can't Move

A portable dot peen marking machine goes to the part: trailer frames, H-beams, pipe spools, tanks and installed equipment. There are three types. Plug-in costs the least. Battery works where there is no outlet. Pneumatic marks the deepest, up to 1.0 mm.

  • About 5 kg in the hand
  • Battery 3–4 h
  • Up to 1.0 mm deep
  • No computer needed

Which portable marker fits your site?

Short answer: outlet within reach, choose plug-in. Outdoors, at height or far from power, choose battery. Marks deeper than 0.5 mm, choose pneumatic.

Speed and what it marks

How fast is a portable dot peen marker?

Short answer: about 1–3 characters a second for 2 mm high characters, the same as our benchtop models. Taller characters take longer. A 10-character serial number at 2 mm takes roughly 3–10 seconds.

Text and numbers

Part numbers, heat numbers, dates and serial numbers. A full 17-character VIN needs the 120 × 40 mm window of HS-PE02-B MAX, HS-PE01 or HS-PE01-P.

Data Matrix codes

The 2D code dot peen marks is Data Matrix: a square grid of dots that suits a pin. Keep the code inside the marking window and test that it scans on the finished part.

No computer on site

None of the five portable models needs a computer. You set the text on the unit, then press start.

Example: a 9-character serial such as SN2417035, 2 mm high, marks in about 3–9 seconds, plus the time to place the head. Taller or deeper characters take longer, so test with your real text size.

The part fits on a bench? A benchtop marker is faster to load for batches. See all dot peen marking machines, benchtop and handheld.

Depth that survives coating

Will the part be galvanized? Plan the depth first

Aim for 0.8 mm deep and 13 mm high. That is what the American Galvanizers Association advises for marks that must read after hot-dip galvanizing (AGA). Paint pens and oil markers leave bare spots in the zinc instead.

The zinc layer itself is thin: ASTM A123 minimums run from about 45 µm on pipe to 100 µm on heavy shapes (AGA, ASTM A123). A 0.8 mm mark is about ten times deeper than that.

0.8 mm is past the 0.5 mm range of plug-in and battery units, so this job calls for the pneumatic HS-PE01-P.

Example: pipe spools going to the galvanizerA shop marks 8 in pipe spools with a spool ID (SP-2417-035, 11 characters) and a heat number (H58213). At 13 mm high and about 10 mm per character, the ID line is about 110 mm long. Two lines with a 5 mm gap need 31 mm of height. Both fit the 140 × 60 mm window of HS-PE01-P, and 0.8 mm sits inside its 0.05–1.0 mm range. Use a pipe bracket and keep each line short so the gap stays even on the curve.

HS-PE01-P compared with typical split-type pneumatic units

Many low-cost pneumatic markers are split systems: a marking head, a separate controller and often a laptop, all joined by cables. Here is what is different inside HS-PE01-P (per our component specifications) and what it means on the job. For benchtop models, see all dot peen marking machines.

Six things to check before marking on site

SteelAluminum, stainlesshold or bracket

Steel or not?

The two square electromagnets grip steel only. On aluminum or 300-series stainless, hold the unit firmly or use a bracket.

V bracket keeps the head square

Curved parts

Use the V bracket, smaller characters and short lines, so the pin-to-surface gap stays even.

Magnets hold the headon a vertical steel face.Brace it, keep it flat.

Vertical and overhead

On steel, the magnets hold the head while it marks. Brace the unit and keep its face flat to the part.

Lift or platformNot a ladder

At height

Work from a lift or platform, not a ladder. OSHA forbids carrying loads that could make you lose balance on a ladder (29 CFR 1926.1053).

≈ half capacity at −18 °C0 °CCharge indoors, above 0 °C

Cold weather

Lithium batteries give about half their capacity at −18 °C and must not be charged below 0 °C (Battery University). Keep a spare warm.

Drain dailyFilter / dryer

Compressor air

Wet air makes pneumatic markers misfire and can freeze in lines. Drain the tank daily and fit a filter or dryer.

FAQ

Portable dot peen questions

How much does a portable dot peen marking machine cost?

From $ 2,070 for the plug-in HS-PE02 to $ 2,500 for the pneumatic HS-PE01-P. Battery models sit in between: HS-PE02-B $ 2,300 and HS-PE02-B MAX $ 2,350. Shipping to the US and Canada is free, and US orders include duties.

How fast does it mark?

About 1–3 characters a second at 2 mm character height. A 10-character serial number at that size takes roughly 3–10 seconds. Taller or deeper characters take longer.

Plug-in or battery: which should I buy?

Plug-in if an outlet is within cable reach; it costs a little less. Battery if you mark outdoors, at height or on long parts far from power.

How long does the battery last in winter?

3–4 hours per charge in normal conditions, and noticeably less in deep cold. Keep a spare battery warm and charge only above 0 °C.

What do I need to run the pneumatic handheld?

A shop compressor giving dry air at about 0.4–0.6 MPa (60–90 psi), like other pneumatic markers. No computer: the touchscreen controller stores the text, serials and dates.

Can I mark a pipe or round bar?

Yes, with the V bracket that keeps the head square on the pipe. Keep lines short on small diameters. Ask us about a bracket for your pipe size.

Can I mark through paint or mill scale?

Mark bare metal first, then paint or galvanize. On parts that are already painted, use a handheld fiber laser. Grind heavy scale to a clean spot before marking.

How heavy is it to carry?

The handheld unit weighs about 5 kg. Shipped in its case, the gross weight is 8–15 kg depending on the model. Battery models need no cable on site; pneumatic models need an air hose.

Can a portable dot peen marker mark a Data Matrix code?

Yes. Data Matrix is the dot-based 2D code used for part marking, and it suits dot peen. Keep the code inside the marking window and check that it scans on the finished part, after painting or coating.

Can it mark aluminum or stainless steel?

Yes. Softer metals mark deeper at the same setting. The magnet base will not grip them, so hold the unit firmly or use a bracket.
