Portable VIN & Chassis Marking Machines for Automotive, Trailers & Heavy Equipment

Mark VINs, chassis IDs and serial numbers on vehicles, trailers and large metal parts. Compare pneumatic, electric and battery-powered dot peen systems by marking depth, available utilities and access to the part, then qualify the result through your actual painting or finishing process.

Bring the marker to the chassis—not the chassis to the machine. HT Marker offers pneumatic, plug-in electric and battery-powered dot peen systems for VINs, serial numbers and heavy-part DPM. Select the configuration by required depth, marking window, material, surface geometry, coating sequence and available power.

Compliance note: VIN format, location, character size, legibility and certification duties vary by vehicle category and destination. For the United States, manufacturers should evaluate the applicable requirements in 49 CFR Parts 565 and 567. HT Marker supplies the marking equipment and process-development support; the vehicle manufacturer or responsible compliance team approves the final marking specification.

Why Buyers Use Portable VIN Marking

Portable marking is useful when frames, trailers, engine blocks or fabricated structures cannot be moved to a bench station. The project references below represent the kinds of automotive and heavy-industry workflows HT Marker supports. Choose the Right Portable VIN Marker by Depth, Power & Mobility

Don't drag heavy chassis to a desktop machine. Bring the machine to the metal. Choose the right power source and marking window for your specific shop floor or outdoor yard.

Handheld Pneumatic with Electromagnetic Base

HS-PE01-P pneumatic deep marker

Choose this configuration when deep indentation and secure attachment to ferromagnetic steel are the priority. The published machine range is 0.05–1.0 mm material-dependent depth, a 140×60 mm marking area and 0.3–0.7 MPa air supply. Its electromagnetic base helps stabilize the head on suitable steel chassis while the pneumatic drive provides the widest depth window of these three options.

HS-PE01 Plug-in Electric Dot Peen

HS-PE01 plug-in electric marker

An airless, integrated option for indoor production and repair shops. The current specification lists a 140×60 mm marking area, 0.05–0.8 mm material-dependent measured depth range, support for metals up to HRC 60, AC 100–240 V input and a built-in 7-inch controller. Use it when you need deep marking without an air compressor.

HS-PE02-BMAX Battery-Powered Marker

HS-PE02-B MAX battery marker

Built for trailer yards, field work and locations without convenient power or air. It provides a 120×40 mm marking area, a stated 0.05–0.5 mm material-dependent depth range, metals up to HRC 60, an integrated controller and approximately 4 hours of continuous operation under the published test conditions. Confirm the actual 17-character layout before ordering.

Permanent Traceability That Survives the Elements

A successful VIN process is defined by the finished vehicle—not by one universal depth number. Start with the governing specification, then qualify the mark on the real material and coating sequence.

  • Regulatory and customer input: provide destination market, vehicle or trailer category, required character format, approved location and any OEM or inspection specification. In the United States, 49 CFR Parts 565 and 567 address VIN and certification requirements; they should not be replaced by a supplier’s generic depth claim.

  • Depth after finishing: specify whether marking occurs before or after paint, powder coat, e-coat, blasting or galvanizing. Specify the required finished depth, tune impact force on the actual material, then measure the first mark and inspect the finished part. A harder impact is not automatically better because material thickness, stress and appearance also matter.

  • One-position 17-character marking: HS-PE02-B MAX offers 120×40 mm; HS-PE01 and HS-PE01-P list 140×60 mm. A complete VIN can be produced without repositioning when the approved font, height, spacing and start/end margins fit the selected window.

How to Qualify a VIN Marking Process on a Large Chassis

Portable dot peen avoids moving a large frame to a fixed marking station, but the process still needs controlled positioning and acceptance checks.

  1. Define the requirement: destination market, VIN format, character size, location, depth or finished-state legibility target, and production volume.
  2. Match the fixture: use an electromagnetic base only on suitable ferromagnetic steel; use an application-specific support or clamp for aluminum, non-magnetic alloys, tubes or variable frame geometry.
  3. Run a parameter matrix: test impact level, dot density, speed and character spacing on the actual material or a representative coupon.
  4. Repeat the real finishing sequence: inspect after paint, powder coat, e-coat, blasting or galvanizing where applicable.
  5. Lock the job file: approve the result, save the template and control operator access to serialization data.

The video shows the positioning and marking workflow. For a recommendation, send photos of the marking area, material, finished-state requirement and desired character layout. A shipped sample or coupon test can also be arranged when physical validation is necessary.

VIN 4
VIN basics

What a VIN is and how it has to be marked

A VIN (vehicle identification number) has 17 characters. US rule 49 CFR 565.13 says it must appear clearly and indelibly on the vehicle or on a plate that is permanently attached (49 CFR 565.13). States add their own rules for trailers and rebuilt vehicles, so check with your DMV before you re-mark a frame. This is not legal advice.

A full 17-character VIN needs a marking window of at least about 120 × 40 mm. The HS-PE02-B MAX (120 × 40 mm) and HS-PE01 (140 × 60 mm) fit it in one pass. The smaller HS-PE02 and HS-PE02-B (90 × 30 mm) are for serial and part numbers.

A dot peen marker checks the 17 characters on its screen before it marks, so a typo is caught before it is on the frame.

VIN & Chassis Marking FAQs

How deep should a VIN be marked on a trailer or chassis?

There is no single universal VIN depth that applies to every vehicle, trailer and market. Begin with the governing regulation, OEM or inspection specification and the required finished-state legibility. HT Marker’s current portable models cover published material-dependent ranges from about 0.05 mm to 1.0 mm, depending on model. If the part is painted, blasted or galvanized after marking, qualify the chosen setting through the complete finishing process rather than assuming a generic depth guarantees acceptance.

Yes—when the approved character layout fits the machine window. HS-PE02-B MAX provides 120×40 mm; HS-PE01 and HS-PE01-P list 140×60 mm. Send the character height, font, spacing and required margins so the layout can be checked before purchase. This is more reliable than assuming every 17-character format fits automatically.

An electromagnetic base helps hold the marking head on ferromagnetic steel, reducing movement while marking vertical, angled or large chassis surfaces. It does not clamp to aluminum, stainless grades with weak magnetic response or other non-magnetic materials. Those applications need a mechanical support, shaped front plate or custom fixture matched to the geometry.

  • Choose HS-PE01-P pneumatic when compressed air is available and the project needs the strongest depth capability in this group: a published 0.05–1.0 mm range.

  • Choose HS-PE01 plug-in electric for an airless shop setup, integrated 7-inch control and a published 0.05–0.8 mm material-dependent range.

  • Choose HS-PE02-B MAX battery for outdoor yards, remote repairs or large structures where cables and air lines restrict access; it offers 120×40 mm and about four hours of stated continuous operation.

The controller supports alphanumeric text, serial data, vector graphics and 2D codes. A logo or certification symbol can be included when the file format and available space are suitable. Regulatory marks and certification symbols should only be used when your organization is authorized and the final layout has been approved by the responsible compliance team.

Yes. The same portable systems can mark serial numbers, batch codes and 2D Data Matrix codes on engine blocks, gearboxes, fabricated frames and other large parts that are difficult to move. Provide the alloy or hardness, part geometry, code size, required cycle time and verification method so the stylus, fixture and parameter window can be selected for the real DPM requirement.
