It melts cleanly and produces polished, flame-like edges that look professional right off the machine. Cast acrylic, on the other hand, is better suited for engraving rather than cutting. It produces a frosted appearance when engraved but tends to have rougher edges if cut.
Your laser power settings will play a big role in the outcome. Too low, and the engraving may look dull or uneven. Too high, and you risk melting or distorting the material. Always start with a test piece to find the ideal combination of speed, power, and frequency for your specific acrylic sheet. A good test file helps you fine-tune these settings before committing to the final job.
Before engraving, remove the protective film from both sides of the acrylic. Leaving it on can trap heat or cause burning marks during processing. When positioning your artwork, consider mirroring your design if you want a clear, see-through finish. Engraving the design from the back allows the front surface to remain smooth and glossy, which is ideal for display items.
Air-assist systems can be useful, but be careful when using them with acrylic. The nozzle can collect smoke and residue, affecting the quality of the cuts. Only use air-assist when needed, and make sure the nozzle is clean and properly aligned. Overcooling can cause the acrylic to crack or warp.
Proper spacing in your design is also critical. Overlapping lines or cuts that are too close together can cause uneven edges or excessive melting. Keep enough distance between cut paths to maintain clean separation and clarity in your final product.
Finally, remember that acrylic fumes can be harmful. Always use your laser engraver in a well-ventilated area or connect it to an exhaust system. While acrylic fumes are not as toxic as some other plastics, prolonged exposure can still irritate your lungs and eyes.
